Dessert Gallery offers delectible desserts & healthy choices, too!

Dessert Gallery is an intriguing and interesting mix of tasty treats, healthful options, and casual coziness brought to us by the local success story of Sara Brook, a warm, determined woman who turned a lifelong love of baking into a successful business. Native Houstonian, Sara Brook, had an entrepreneurial streak at an early age, founding businesses in her twenties.  Dessert Gallery is the third food related business started by Brook, who grew Dessert Gallery into a popular and media acclaimed restaurant, while, as a single mom, simultaneously raising her young daughter. Dessert Gallery opened in the mid-1990s when Brook’s daughter was still quite young.

Through the years and with the aid of Brook’s dedicated devotion, both Dessert Gallery and Brook’s daughter blossomed. Today, Dessert Gallery is a welcome and well-loved fixture at the intersection of Richmond and Kirby, offering not only desserts, but also sandwiches, salads, and wraps.

Among the healthier options for lunch or dinner sandwiches are:  (1.) the California Turkey on Wheat, (2.) Power Veggie Supreme on Wheat, (3.) Tomatoes Caprese on Ciabatta, (4.) Grandma’s Chicken Salad on Sliced Brioche, and (5.) Nicoise Tuna Salad on Croissant. For those persons wishing to avoid all refined white flour, whole wheat wraps may be requested in place of a white bread choice. Also, chicken for chicken sandwiches or for salads is cooked fresh by Dessert Gallery; the same process applies to the tuna steaks used for tuna containing sandwiches or salads. No canned or otherwise “pre-processed” chicken or tuna is used at the restaurant.  Brook explained that she wants her products to be as close to homemade in taste, quality, and character as at all possible. Wholesomeness and purity are important to her, and therefore, she insists on using fresh, real ingredients without fillers that are prepared to meet the needs of each recipe.

Among the healthiest salad choices are: the Baby Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad and the Space City Chicken Salad, which features a nicely balanced blend of ingredients from the major food groups. Included in the Space City salad are: chicken breast meat, baby spinach, green leaf lettuce, arugula, bleu cheese, grapes, walnuts, and balsamic vinaigrette. Another healthy and unusual choice is the Grilled Chicken Southwest Caesar, which features the traditional ingredients of chicken breast, romaine lettuce, and garlic croutons combined with the unexpected Southwest styled additions of roasted corn, black beans, jicama, tomatoes, and Roasted Poblano Parmesan Dressing.

Because Dessert Gallery is open extended hours, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mon.–Thurs. and 11a.m. to midnight Fri.-Sat., as well as Sun. 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., the restaurant provides a wide array of possibilities for business lunches and light dinners, as well as a fun spot to meet family and friends after work hours or on weekends.

If celebration is on the mind and luscious desserts fit the bill, then Dessert Gallery has a varied menu of choices from which to select. Cakes, cookies, brownies, and bars are plentiful.  There are even dessert choices for people with special dietary needs.  A number of dessert selections do not have nuts. There is a delicious Lemon Vacherin cake, which is flourless, for the gluten intolerant or celiac disease patient. There is a particularly scrumptious Non-Dairy Chocolate Cake for the lactose intolerant individual. This cake is made with soymilk.  For diabetics or people simply trying to watch their sugar intake, there is a No Sugar Added Carrot Cake, which is rather remarkable in both flavor and consistency.  Not all “special needs” foods are available all the time; so, it is best to call ahead and see what is available that day, or better still, give three business days notice to the restaurant if you know ahead of time that members of your gathering will have special dietary needs and special food will need to be prepared in advance.

For business meetings or social get-to-together events, Dessert Gallery offers catering services, wherein most of their menu choices can be made available to groups of people.  Planning and conversing with restaurant personnel is recommended.

For questions concerning the menu, catering, or special dietary needs, call Dessert Gallery at (713) 522-9999.  The restaurant’s web site at www.dessertgallery.com is also a useful resource.
