5 Women Who Are Making NFL History

Kathryn Smith, Buffalo Bills
Historically a male organization, the National Football League (NFL) has been adding some variety to its usual line up. In recent years, you’ve seen broadcasters and refs, and finally in 2016 the first full-time female coach.
In honor of Super Bowl 51 knocking on Houston’s door, we wanted to share some of the women who have been a part of NFL’s journey to include diversity.
Jennifer Welter, Arizona Cardinals
Jennifer Welter (left) became the first woman to hold a coaching position of any kind in the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals hired her as an inside linebackers’ coach after she worked with them throughout training camp and the preseason.
Sarah Thomas was the first woman to become an American football official. In April 2015, the National Football League hired Thomas after she officiated many major college football games, including a bowl game.
Erin Andrews is an American sportscaster and journalist who is an NFL sideline reporter for FOX Sports. Andrews is admired by many young girls and has taught them that it is not weird for females to understand and admire sports. Andrews just recently battled cervical cancer.

Kathryn Smith (below) always wanted to pursue a career in sports, and that goal translated to the historic move of becoming the first full-time female coach on an NFL staff in 2016.

Katherine "Katie" Blackburn is Executive Vice President of the Cincinnati Bengals, an American football team in the National Football League.
